The college offers academic and vocational courses. The college has its origins in Henley Grammar School which was founded in 1604 under a charter granted by King James I. It moved to Rotherfield Court in 1928 following the discovery of a corpse on the grounds. It had a rowing team and was based on Gravel Hill. It had the South Oxfordshire Centre of Advanced Studies. By the mid-1970s it was known as Henley Grammar and Sixth Form College. This was believed to be a good name as it's 'funkyness' would entice new students.
In 1976 the grammar school became King James's College, on Paradise Road. It had a CCF, which it inherited from the grammar school. Keith Dawson was the Principal from 1984-7. It amalgamated in 1987 with the South Oxfordshire Technical College on Deanfield Avenue and formed the present institution.
The college consists of two sites, Deanfield and Rotherfield, the latter located off the top of the (steep) road and often referred to by the students as "going up the hill" or "going upstairs". A third site at the bottom of the hill, Southfield, was previously home to the English, Drama Studies and Catering departments but was demolished in 1998 and the land sold to fund improvements to the rest of the site. A new building was made on the Deanfield site creating a purpose built restaurant for the catering students to work in and new class rooms. Recently the Catering department was closed.
The college offers a range of full-time courses, including A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, BTEC National Diploma and NVQs. It also runs adult education and part-time courses leading to a variety of qualifications.
The college has been noted for the standard of its Performing Arts department and is home to The Completely Cuckoo Theatre Company.
The Henley College, offers a variety of sports for the sports development course, this allows students to work in a sport of their choice into their timetable twice a week. Examples of sports offered are football, basketball, netball, rowing and rugby union. Due to Henley being the home of the UK's rowing, the college is well represented in this sport.
The Henley College has a reasonably successful rugby union scheme, with two teams. The scheme is a partnership with the professional team, London Wasps. The scheme allows certain players to have the opportunity to train playing rugby, play matches for the college and have three weekly weight training sessions.
Additionally, the first team has had and does at this moment in time have county players, regional players and currently an England player.
On Thursday 26 March 2009, the Henley College sevens team entered in the annual the National School Sevens competition at Rosslyn Park. They won all matches in their group, group E, and made it to the last 16. On Friday 27 March, the team continued their participation in the competition, finishing 5th in the national tournament.
Henley Hawks has historical connections with the college.
